Short Bio:

Tracy Tillman has a Ph.D. is a full Professor at EMU, and is a Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE), a Certified Enterprise Integrator (CEI), and a Certified Engineering Manager (CEM). He worked full time as a machinist for an automotive manufacturing supplier throughout his B.S. degree in Manufacturing and Automotive Technologies at Minnesota State University, and owned a flying and flying equipment business in Minnesota during that time, as well. Upon graduation, he obtained employment with a Japanese-owned electronics manufacturing firm in Minnesota, and progressed through production and supervision, production engineering, machine and tool design, manufacturing engineering and management, and plant management at that company. He left that company to focus on his flying business and to work on a masters degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology and Education, also at Minnesota State University. Upon completion of that degree, he went to Purdue University to pursue a multi-disciplinary Ph.D. in Industrial Technology, Educational and Industrial Psychology, and Industrial Engineering. He taught for the Mechanical Engineering Technology and Industrial Technology departments while at Purdue, and did contract work for Subaru-Isuzu Automotive as well. His dissertation research focused on delineating a new body of knowledge and certification examination in Manufacturing Technology and Engineering for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers' certification institute. After graduation, he continued to teach at Purdue, and worked on an additional Master's degree in Industrial Engineering. He also attended some classes at Cleveland State University, and completed his IE masters degree in absentia from Purdue after becoming a faculty member at Eastern Michigan University in 1990. At EMU, he has taught classes for our CAD, CAM, Manufacturing, Engineering Technology, and Quality programs, and is currently the program coordinator for EMU’s Engineering Management masters degree program and Chair of the COT PhD in Technology operations committee. He was a content expert and psychometric consultant for many years for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers on certification and professional licensure projects, and he is a TAC/ABET program evaluator for Manufacturing Engineering Technology program accreditation. In 1999, he was the recipient of SME's national teaching award, the Sargent Americanism Award, for quality and innovation in university-level teaching of integrated manufacturing and business practices. Dr. Tillman has authored or been a contributor to over 60 publications and has made a similar number of national and international-level presentations on topics related to his areas of expertise. Dr. Tillman and his wife are both commercial airplane and glider pilots, and he is a safety counselor for the FAA’s Detroit FSDO region. He and his wife teach flying and hang gliding as a hobby in the summer, and have flown in several US National Hang Gliding National Championship competitions. He is on the Board of Directors for the US Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association.
