Professor Van Der Velde's Program Home Page
Professor Robert J. Van Der Velde has been a tenured Professor in the School of Technology Studies at Eastern Michigan University since 2003. From June 2003 to December 2004 he served as EMU's Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, where his responsibilities included service as the University's chief academic personnel officer. From 1999-2003 he was Head of the Department of Justice & Public Safety at Auburn University Montgomery, where he was a member of the faculty since 1995. He served as President of the AUM Faculty Senate, chaired the University's Information Technology Advisory Council, and was instrumental in the creation of a nationally recognized Faculty Development Institute as well as the design of a new wing of technology classrooms. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from The Ohio State University, the M.S. in Urban Studies from Cleveland State University, and a J.D. cum laude from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Van Der Velde was selected as the 1979 Harry S. Truman Scholar from Ohio, and was a participant in the 2000 Management Development Program in the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University .
Van Der Velde is admitted to practice law in Ohio and the District of Columbia, has appeared before U.S. District Courts in twenty-three states, and has argued appeals in five Circuits of the United States Courts of Appeals. He has been a Delegate to three Democratic National Conventions, was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for Paralegal Education, and an officer of the Alabama Council of University Faculty Presidents. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Lake County (Ohio) Bar Association, the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, and the Alabama Academy of Sciences.
